Frequently Asked Questions

There are three methods available for installing Tonus™ Slat:

Direct Gluing onto the Wall: Use a construction glue or high strength grab adhesive for this method. Try our Maximum Torque Adhesive here.

Direct Wall Screwing: For black-backed panels, use black screws. Ensure a minimum of 9 screws per panel, spaced at 200mm intervals across the width and 800mm intervals down the length. When installing on ceilings, ensure they are affixed to ceiling joists. If installing into plasterboard, ensure appropriate fixings are used.

Mounting Panels onto 45mm Timber Batons: First, screw 45mm timber batons onto the wall, then secure the panels directly onto the batons through the acoustic felt to optimize sound absorption. When combined with Rockwool sound insulation between the batons, this method achieves much improved sound absorption level.

Determining the optimal quantity of Tonus™ Slat panels isn’t an exact science. Broadly, increased surface coverage leads to greater sound absorption and reduced echo. As a general guideline, aiming to cover approximately 30% to 50% of the ceiling area typically results in effective sound absorption. Alternatively, opt for an entire wall coverage for a stylish feature wall and enhanced performance.

Tonus™ Slat is made of black acoustic felt (recycled polyester from plastic bottles) and the slats have an MDF core with a wood veneer surface.

Your order will consist of the Tonus™ Slat Wall panels only and you will require tube adhesive and screws dependant on the installation method you chose.

Yes, Tonus™ Slat is limited to these veneer colours. We hope you can find a colour you like in this selection however, if you can’t find the perfect colour choice for your space please get in touch and we might have an alternative option for you.

The sizes shown on our website are our standard and only sizes however, if you do need a specific size, these panels can be easily cut on site.

When installing Tonus™ Slat, you should consider the mounting surface. The right surface should ensure a secure, long-lasting installation. Suitable surfaces include:

  • Drywall or plasterboard – Panels can be mounted directly using adhesive and black drywall screws.
  • Concrete walls – Panels can be adhered with heavy-duty adhesive and black screws.
  • Brick and masonry walls – Panels can be affixed using heavy duty adhesive and black screws.
  • Lightly painted walls – Surfaces should be roughened slightly to improve adhesion. Avoid glossy, heavily textured or damaged painted walls.

Selecting the right compatible surface ensures secure panel installation and optimal acoustic performance.

Yes, your order will consist of Tonus™ Slat only and you will require tube adhesive and screws dependant on the installation method you chose.

The standard Tonus™ Slat panels are not fire rated as a system but please get in touch for options on fire rated panels available or how to improve the rating by using a fire-retardant seal on the standard panels.

Tonus™ Slat naturally absorbs direct sound and reflections. Installing the appropriate number of panels achieves effective results, reducing echo and reverberation for a quieter, more tranquil atmosphere.

Tonus™ slat has not undergone acoustic testing. Although its primary feature lies in its transformative impact on any interior, it also effectively absorbs sound. The 9mm PET backing will effectively absorb unwanted background noise and reduce echo in your space.

Tonus™ Slat is manufactured in and shipped from the UK.

Yes, there is flexibility within the Tonus™ Slat panel to allow for an installation around a small, curved wall. For this type of installation, it is important that screws are used to secure in place.

Yes, Tonus™ Slat panels are made to fit a standard sized wall, but cuts are often required during the installation and can be done. You can use a variety of cutting tools to cut through the MDF slats, common options include a circular saw or a jigsaw. You can cut through the felt backing by a utility knife with a sharp blade. Score the material lightly first, then gradually increase pressure to cut through the felt. Be cautious to avoid applying too much force, which could cause the material to shift or tear.
